Scott D. Butcher, FSMPS, CPSM has been passionate about research for many years. In addition to the regular environmental scanning, metrics interpretation, and market research he’s conducted for the firms where he’s worked, Scott also led several national research initiatives for the Society for Marketing Professional Services and SMPS Foundation. He is a former president of the SMPS Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing relevant and timely AEC-focused research. Scott led the research and authored the resulting publication, Sell. Do. Win Business. How A/E/C Firms are Using Staff to Win More Work. He co-lead the research and co-authored the book A/E/C Business Development – The Decade Ahead. Recently, Scott led new SMPS research about marketing trends and approaches that AEC firms will be using in 2022. His interpretation of the findings has been drafted and submitted to SMPS for publication.

Scott shares research findings in the lively program Know This! Megatrends in the Design Industry, a regularly-updated presentation that he has given as both a conference keynote and breakout session (as well as programs for local chapters of AEC associations). AEC Marketing Trends Research, National – Led a national survey of members of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS). Purpose was to determine anticipated changes to sales and marketing approaches over the next three years. Researched current business-to-consumer and business-to-business marketing trends; designed research approach and wrote questions. Analyzed data and authored an 8000-word summary of the findings. This report is scheduled to be published later in 2019.

AEC Business Development Trends Research, National – Led a national research initiative of the Society for Marketing Professional Services and SMPS Foundation. Goal was to determine how firms are using seller-doers and dedicated business developers, whether using these approaches in tandem or individually. Looked at business development responsibilities, time commitments, training, incentives, and more. Authored the report Sell. Do. Win Business. How A/E/C Firms Are Using Staff to Win More Work.
