aecumen (pronounced just like “acumen”) is an architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) consultancy providing training and facilitation as well as marketing and business development services. aecumen is led by AEC industry expert Scott D. Butcher, FSMPS, CPSM. With almost three decades of experience, Scott has worked with architectural, engineering, construction, and environmental firms as a consultant, trainer, facilitator, and employee. He is a Certified Professional Services Marketer through the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS).  Scott holds a BS in Marketing from The Pennsylvania State University, a Certificate in Professional Photography from the New York Institute of Photography, and three certifications from Hubspot Academy.  He is a Fellow of SMPS and recipient of the Central Penn Business Journal Forty Under 40, Leadership York Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, SMPS Central PA Keystone Award, and SMPS Philadelphia Supporting Member Award.

Leading the AEC Industry

Scott is a former Fellows Delegate/At-Large Director to the Society for Marketing Professional Services Board of Directors (national).  He is also a former Trustee and past president of the SMPS Foundation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to research and education in the field of architecture/engineering/construction marketing and business development.  As co-chair of the SMPS Foundation’s Thought Leadership Committee, he served as manager, editor, and co-author of the landmark book, A/E/C BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT – The Decade Ahead.  In the process, Scott worked with 29 professionals from around the country to conduct more than 100 interviews with sellers and buyers of design and construction services to determine industry trends and typical behaviors.  More recently, he authored Sell. Do. Win Business. How A/E/C Firms are Using Staff to Win More Work, a research-based report of SMPS and SMPS Foundation. He also served as the liaison between the Foundation and the authors of the popular white paper from the SMPS Foundation, The Client’s Use of Social Media and Social Networking.  Scott was co-founder of the Central Pennsylvania Affiliate Chapter of SMPS, which was originally part of the Philadelphia Chapter, and spent six years on the governing committee.  Scott also served as director of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for six years.

Serving the Community

Giving back to the community has always been important to Scott, and he has served on the boards of directors for a number of local non-profit organizations.  He is currently vice president of marketing for National Central Railroad – Steam Into History, a nonprofit excursion railroad. Scott also served as president, secretary, and director of Historic York Inc.; vice president, secretary, and director of Main Street York; secretary and director of Leadership York; director of York County Convention & Visitors Bureau; and director of American Red Cross – York County Chapter.  He has also been a volunteer with the York County Heritage Trust, William C. Goodridge Freedom House & Underground Railroad Museum, York March for Babies, and other organizations and events.

He currently authors the Marketropolis blog on ENR.com  Previously, Scott served as a blogger on the York Daily Record’s YorkBlog site – his blog “Windows into York” focused on local architecture and history.

A regular presenter to professional organizations and community groups, Scott has given more than 250 presentations to the national conferences and programs of American Institute of Architects, Associated General Contractors, American Council of Engineering Companies, Construction Management Association of America, Society for Design Administration, PSMJ Thrive Industry Summit, National Council of Structural Engineering Associations, ROG Growth & Ownership Strategies Conference, Deltek Insight, Society for Marketing Professional Services, and Society of American Military Engineers.  He also speaks regularly to community groups and business organizations.
